Gary Cahill says defender Chelsea signed for just £7m was so underrated

Gary Cahill played in Chelsea teams that had some of the most technically-gifted players in the Premier League.

As a result, Cahill and some of his teammates went under the radar despite being very good footballers themselves.

The former Chelsea defender has been discussing one of them, whom he has described as “world-class”.

Gary Cahill names Cesar Azpilicueta as most underrated teammate he’s played with

Cahill himself does not think that his ex-Chelsea teammate Cesar Azpilicueta is actually underrated.

However, the retired England international does feel that others have perhaps underrated the full-back because of the position that he plays in.

When asked to name the most underrated teammate he has played with, Cahill told the Premier League’s official TikTok account: “I don’t think he’s underrated. Well I know he’s not underrated because he’s world-class, but Azpilicueta, just played in that unflattering position but someone who was so, so good.”

Cahill and Azpilicueta won two Premier League titles together back in the 2014/15 and 2016/17 seasons.

They also won the Champions League, but not as teammates. Cahill got his hands on European football’s most prestigious prize in the 2011/12 campaign, the season before Azpilicueta joined.

As for Azpilicueta, he captained Chelsea to the honour in 2021, when Cahill was no longer at the club.

Last month, Cahill also spoke about current Chelsea star Robert Sanchez, urging the goalkeeper to stop making so many costly mistakes.

Where is Cesar Azpilicueta now?

After leaving Chelsea in 2023, Azpilicueta joined Atletico Madrid where he made 54 appearances before departing last summer.

The Spaniard is now at Sevilla and has played 15 games for them this season. He is still looking for his first goal.

When Chelsea signed Azpilicueta from Marseille all those years ago, they paid just £7m for his signature, making him one of the best bargains in Premier League history.

The Blues could really do with his defensive ability and leadership now. Under Liam Rosenior, they have been really leaky.

Chelsea kept a clean sheet last time out, but that was against League One outfit Port Vale. Their true test will come this Sunday when they take on Manchester City.
