All GameCube Games #373: NFL Blitz Pro

Posted 08 Apr 2026 at 08:04 by Dean Jones

The big final NFL Blitz game before Midway lost the NFL license and had to rethink their strategy, which ended up being to make fictional teams and massively dial up the violence. But did the main franchise go out with a bang? Well, despite the “Pro” name, this is the worst feeling NFL Blitz game I’ve played.

Everything just feels slow, like it’s attempting to be more like Madden than an arcade style game, it’s in the awkward middle ground between the two ideas with none of what either one is good at. The running and passing is less arcade-like and the tackles don’t have the same impact.

The best example of this strange mix is in choosing plays. You’re presented with nine different categories, each with multiple sets of three plays. This is a rather large choice, but good for serious gamers. The problem is…it decides to keep the arcade part and gives you a whopping nine seconds to decide. If you don’t know it off by heart, you have no chance.

There’s also a distinct lack of modes, and the costumes from the previous game are also gone. It’s a shockingly bad final release.

NFL Blitz Pro has good qualities, but ultimately, it tries much too hard to be something it isn’t. The game’s simulation football aspects just aren’t very well done, and the total inability to customize the game’s rules, speed, or the like in any way is kind of ridiculous, especially considering how important that aspect was to NHL Hitz Pro’s success.
