Chelsea encouraged to bring£300k-a-week‘WINNER’to Stamford Bridge

Former Premier League midfielder Charlie Adam has criticised Chelsea’s decision to allow Antonio Rüdiger to leave the club in 2022 and has urged the Blues to consider a move for the German centre-back, according to sources close to recent transfer discussions.

Adam, who played in the English top flight for a decade, said on a podcast this week that CHELSEA’s defence “lacks the leadership and presence Rüdiger brought to Stamford Bridge” and that bringing him back would be a “statement of intent” from the West London club as they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.

The former midfielder argued that Chelsea had lost a “dominant figure at the heart of the defence” when Rüdiger departed for Real Madrid on a free transfer, and that the Stamford Bridge hierarchy should “make a push” for the 33-year-old this summer.

Re-signing Rudiger is doubtful for a number of reasons, not least Chelsea’s policy of primarily signing young and players with resale value, but Adam says they should shelve that playbook to bring the two-time Champions League winner back.

‘They should never have let him go or allowed him to leave,’ Adam said on Sky Sports when asked if Chelsea should consider re-signing Rudiger.

‘I understand it was Real Madrid he joined but they never should have got to that position where he could leave. He’s phenomenal. I’ve said before that he’s the ideal person that Chelsea need back.

‘When CHELSEA had Thiago Silva he was so important, Rudiger could fill the void as long as Chelsea get over this policy of only signing young players.’

Would Rüdiger be a good fit for Chelsea now?

Rüdiger’s qualities are well-documented from his time at Stamford Bridge — aerial dominance, aggression in duels, and an ability to drive forward from deep positions made him one of the Premier League’s most respected defenders during his peak years.

His partnership with Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta under Thomas Tuchel helped Chelsea secure the UEFA Champions League in 2021, and his presence often galvanised the back line.

Bringing Rüdiger back would signal that CHELSEA are serious about competing at the top end of the table. His experience in England and familiarity with the club’s culture would ease the transition, and he could mentor younger defenders.

On the flip side, his age and recent injury history — including spells on the sidelines this season — raise questions about his long-term durability and how much of a central role he could realistically play.

Ultimately, re-signing Rüdiger would be as much about leadership and experience as athletic output. For Chelsea’s current squad — which is blending youth with established pros — his presence could be a stabilising influence
