Dolphins predicted to draft 6-foot-5 QB as long-term answer after Tua Tagovailoa flop, Malik Willis signing

The Miami Dolphins have already found one quarterback solution this offseason. They signed Malik Willis in free agency to replace Tua Tagovailoa.

QBs in Willis' situation don't always pan out, though, after so few NFL starts before their big contract. And that could lead the Dolphins to trying to find a backup solution in this month's draft.

They've got Quinn Ewers, too, but he doesn't have enough upside to deter Miami from picking a QB if they like one.

ESPN's Ben Solak thinks the "perfect fit" may be on the board for the Dolphins at pick 130 in the fourth round: Drew Allar out of Penn State.

The 6-foot-5 QB was viewed before the 2025 college football season as a probable first-round pick. Then the Nittany Lions struggled and Allar sustained a season-ending injury, knocking his stock down.

By the 130th pick, though, Allar might be a flier worth taking.

"Allar can make anticipation throws into tight windows against the sideline or to the middle of the field, and that's tough to teach," Solak wrote in his new article on Wednesday. "Winning with arm talent on rhythm throws from the pocket is how C.J. Stroud excelled for Bobby Slowik with the Texans in 2023 and 2024, and that's how Allar will find success in the NFL. The Dolphins are invested in Malik Willis for 2026 and even into 2027, given his contract guarantees, but using an early-Day 3 pick on Allar would allow him to beat out Quinn Ewers for the QB2 job and challenge for QB1 reps in 2027 if Willis struggles."

The nice part about picking Allar in the fourth round rather than the first round is that he doesn't have to work out. If he simply becomes an OK backup, it's a worthwhile pick.

There is likely some untapped upside, though, given the way NFL teams viewed Allar over the past few years. While Miami hasn't always helped quarterbacks reach their best selves, maybe with the new leadership in place, Allar could find a way to thrive.
