Chelsea have begun “initial talks” with Levi Colwill about extending his contract, according to reports.

GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs claims that the Blues are discussing new deals with several players, including Marc Cucurella and even Enzo Fernandez, but Colwill is the next one in the pipeline.

Colwill has not played a single minute of first-team football this season due to an ACL injury.

The 23-year-old has returned to full training, and it is likely that he will make the bench for an upcoming first-team fixture.

Despite Colwill’s long absence this campaign, though, the club are seemingly comfortable about extending his stay beyond his current deal, which expires in 2029.

Colwill is seen as the cornerstone of the defence

The centre-half established himself as a regular starter in the middle of the back four under Enzo Maresca last campaign.

Prior to that, Mauricio Pochettino had opted to play Colwill more often than not as a left-back, but he thrived in Maresca’s setup, helping the team win both the Conference League and the Club World Cup under the Italian.

The injury that the England international sustained back in August was very unlucky. Man had tipped him to kick on and establish himself as a key player for the Blues. The club clearly still believe he will get back to his best once he is fully fit.

Chelsea are hoping to sign another centre-half

After losing out to Liverpool for Jeremy Jacquet, the club are said to be in the market for an alternative this summer. He would more than likely be Colwill’s partner.

The likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiahsile and Tosin Adarabioyo have all struggled with form and fitness, while Trevoh Chalobah is no more than a solid squad option. The 26-year-old is a decent defender, but if Liam Rosenior’s side are to make the leap up to the top of the table, Colwill needs someone who is world-class beside him.
