American Football and Turnstile's Brendan Yates Team Up for "No Feeling": Stream

American Football have teamed up with Turnstile‘s Brendan Yates for “No Feeling,” the latest track from the midwest emo icons’ upcoming self-titled fourth album.

Following the intricacy of lead single “Bad Moons,” “No Feeling” finds American Football “at a point of no return, teetering on the edge of self-destruction, where feeling itself loses meaning.” Yet the rich harmonies of Yates offer a counter to the often tense, always confessional lyrics of frontman Mike Kinsella, ultimately fostering a sense of genuine confrontation followed by all-consuming catharsis.

In the same release, Kinsella said the American Football-Yates combination proved different than expected, but the band can’t argue with the end result:

“Brendan came into the studio to sing along to a ‘gang vocal’ call-and-response part I’d written for the chorus of ‘No Feeling,'” Kinsella said. “I had imagined his voice would be one of many voices scream-singing it, and was excited for it to be a sort of Easter Egg on the album. But after tracking the original parts, he asked if he could try a higher harmony that he was hearing. As soon as he started singing it, all of our jaws dropped, and we all were looking at each other like, ‘Oh shit! that’s the dude from Turnstile!’ His voice is so singular, and once he sang the part in his range, it was clear that the part now belonged to him and him alone…”

The video’s “hallucinogenic animation” depicts these “ghost-like creatures aboard a sunken ship, dancing and celebrating their last moments before a submarine finds them deep underwater.”

Due out May 1st via Polyvinyl, American Football (LP4) houses “Bad Moons,” “No Feeling,” and eight other tracks in total. The record sees the band “face some of life’s harshest realities head-on, reflecting on the disorientation, compromise, grief, and hard-won perspective of middle age.” As part of these “growing pains,” American Football switched up their writing and recording processes to create their “most sonically ambitious album to date — layered, dissonant, occasionally confrontational, and always deeply felt.” It’s the band’s first record since 2019’s LP3.

American Football will be on tour starting in mid-May behind LP4. The outing will see the band donate $1 from from every ticket sold to two immigrants rights groups, Safe Passage International and The Illinois Coalition for Immigration & Refugee Rights.
