Tyler Blackett has signed for New Mexico United in the second tier of football in America.
To many, Tyler Blackett is remembered for graduating from Manchester United’s academy after being given an opportunity in the first team under former manager Louis van Gaal.
Blackett joined United’s academy at the age of eight before coming through the ranks and eventually graduating in 2014, as United said goodbye to legendary defensive duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Two years later, Blackett left United to sign for Reading. He also spent time at Nottingham Forest, FC Cincinnati, and Rotherham United.

Tyler Blackett signs for New Mexico United
It felt like Blackett was in exile for the past two years after being released by Rotherham United.
This has formed a gap in Blackett’s career, which comes as a surprise given how much potential he had at United.
However, Blackett’s final season at Rotherham was plagued by injuries. He then struggled to find a new club in the UK or Europe, and it didn’t help that he was not match-fit.

Having previously played in the United States with FC Cincinnati, Blackett has decided to return to the American system to rebuild his career at the age of 32.
It was announced by New Mexico United that they have signed Blackett for the remainder of the 2026 USL Championship season, which is the division below the MLS.
Speaking to USL media, as quoted by The Sun, New Mexico United Sporting Director Itamar Keinan said: “We are thrilled to add someone with Tyler’s pedigree to our club.
“Tyler is not only bringing a wealth of experience with him, but also real quality and leadership to our backline.

Tyler Blackett’s Man Utd record
After coming through the United academy, Blackett made 12 appearances (11 in the Premier League) during the 2014/15 season.
Blackett made his first senior appearance at Old Trafford in a 2-1 defeat against Swansea City. Wayne Rooney scored an equaliser, but it wasn’t enough as Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the winner with 72 minutes on the clock.
A loan move to Celtic the following season led to Blackett winning the Scottish Premiership, but his chances were limited when he returned to United.
