Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has insisted that Barcelona must make the decision to sign Marcus Rashford for a permanent £30.3m transfer fee this summer.

Marcus Rashford has spent the entire 2025-26 season out on loan so far after Barcelona snapped up the 28-year-old Manchester United talent last summer.

The England international has continued to impress away from Old Trafford after he lost his place in the United first-team squad under Ruben Amorim last season.

Rashford has netted 11 times and registered 13 assists in 40 matches across all competitions since he made his move to the Camp Nou in 2025.

Why Rio Ferdinand thinks that Barcelona must complete a permanent move for Man Utd and England star Marcus Rashford

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has relied on Manchester United star Marcus Rashford as a key first-team option during the Spanish club’s 2025-26 La Liga season.

Rashford took a pay cut last summer to ensure that his transfer to Barcelona went through and the La Liga side are covering the majority of his Man Utd wages.

Man Utd also included the option for Barcelona to permanently sign Rashford in 2026, with the transfer fee set at £30.3m for the England international.

Speaking on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand insisted that the transfer fee more than warrants Barcelona to take the risk in permanently signing Rashford this summer.

“I think Marcus Rashford is looking forward, I think deep down he’ll want to go to Barcelona and I just hope that actually materialises for him,” he said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

“Is he playing consistently like the Rashford that we knew before? I’d argue probably not.

“But we’re seeing more glimpses of it that would be making me go, ‘I’d bet on that,’ and if I [were] Barcelona, then I’d take him.”

Barcelona summer signing Marcus Rashford is unlikely to play for Man Utd again after the Ruben Amorim ‘drama’

Rashford had spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign out on loan after former United manager Amorim made the call to axe him from the starting XI.

Aston Villa signed Rashford on a six-month loan deal and the on-loan Man Utd forward was able to climb back into the England national team in 2025.

The Premier League club had the option to sign the England international for a £40m transfer fee, but Villa decided not to trigger the clause at the end of last season.

Rashford has been handed a new opportunity at the Camp Nou and the chances of the United star returning to the Red Devils in the post-Amorim era are all but over.
