“For a Bad Team, Why Don’t We Have More Picks?”: John Harbaugh Unhappy With Giants Ahead of…

John Harbaugh is feeling the pressure before his first draft with theNew York Giants. The new coach is reportedly unhappy with the lack of assets available to fix the roster.

“Harbaugh was disappointed when he came to this team,” Paul Schwartzsaid. The reporter noted the coach expected more resources to rebuild one of the worst NFL teams.

Harbaugh wants more than seven selections to improve the squad. He specifically questioned why a struggling franchise has such limited capital heading into the crucial offseason.

“For a bad team, why don’t we have more picks?” Harbaugh said. This frustration stems from previous trades that left the cupboard bare for the upcoming 2026 rookie class.

The Giants lack a third-round pick because they acquired Jaxson Dart last year. They surrendered their 2026 third-rounder to move up for the young quarterback prospect.

Harbaugh reportedly only accepted the job because Dart was already in New York. The quarterback recorded 2,200 passing yards and 15 touchdowns during his rookie campaign in 2025.

While Dart remains the centerpiece, the defense is currently falling apart. Star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence officially requested a trade and skipped workouts starting April 7.

Lawrence and the team failed to reach a contract agreement for over two years. He is set to earn $18.5 million in 2026 but wants a long-term commitment.

The Giants currently have less than $6.5 million in cap space. This financial reality makes it nearly impossible to satisfy the demands of their best defensive player right now.

Lawrence has 341 tackles and 30.5 sacks over his career. However, his production dipped to 0.5 sacks and eight quarterback hits during the disappointing 4-win season last year.

John Harbaugh faces massive defensive void if Dexter Lawrence leaves New York

Trading Lawrence would leave the Giants with a massive hole up front. Backup Sam Roberts has only one career sack and 266 total snaps over four professional seasons.

Harbaugh now has the important task of making decisions for the upcoming draft, where he can select players with picks 5, 37, 105, and 145. The team also owns three late sixth-round picks to address several major roster needs.

The coach knows the team needs better defensive tackles, guards, and cornerbacks. Without a third-round selection, finding immediate starters becomes a much more difficult task for him.

The honeymoon period for Harbaugh ended before the first whistle blew. He inherited a franchise with only three playoff appearances over the last 15 seasons.

Draft day will determine if Harbaugh can overcome these early setbacks. The tension between the front office and the coaching staff continues to grow as April approaches.
