Patriots Trade for Terry McLaurin

The New England Patriots hosted Cincinnati Bearcats wide receiver Cyrus Allen for a visit on Wednesday. Sleeper.com’s Arye Pulili reported this.

Allen was a playmaker last season. He recorded 51 receptions for 674 yards and 13 touchdowns. The touchdown catches tied a single-season UC record and led the Big 12 Conference. He was also able to prove his playmaking skills, averaging 13.2 yards per reception.

Allen was invited to the 2026 Senior Bowl for his efforts last season.

Now, it appears the Patriots are doing additional homework on the wideout.

Potential Patriots Target Is A Playmaker

Allen’s playmaking ability was not limited to last season. He began his career at Louisiana Tech and played there for two seasons in 2022 and 2023. The wide receiver tallied 68 catches for 1,278 yards and eight touchdowns over the course of those seasons.

Allen then took his talents to the SEC where he played for Texas A&M in 2024. He started five games and grabbed 18 receptions for 269 yards. Things appear to be on the right track for him. However, he suffered a season-ending arm injury, which tempered an otherwise productive year.

With that being said, it was with Cincinnati that he was able to find his groove. He immediately became one of the best playmakers on their offense. He recorded 51 receptions for 674 yards and 13 touchdowns. The wide receiver ended up being a major scoring threat as well for the Bearcats. He scored at least one touchdown in 10 of his 13 appearances. This included two touchdowns against Kansas on September 27. He recorded seven receptions for hundred 28 yards and two touchdowns in that game.

In addition, Allen proved that he could be a sure hyphenated receiver. He only had one drop on 73 targets last season. He generated 262 receiving yards after the catch. To say he was a dynamic playmaker for Cincinnati last season would be an understatement. He ended up being a massive weapon and the heartbeat of their offense.

Patriots receiver room up in the air

The Patriots are in a unique position in the wide receiver room. They upgraded this offseason, signing former Green Bay Packers standout Romeo Doubs. However, there still could be moves in play. They have been linked to Philadelphia Eagles star A. J. Brown throughout the offseason. The Patriots could be involved in a deal in the month of June. As a result, the wide receiver room may have to wait a little bit in order to get some clarity.

That being said, additional depth is always needed. Allen could be not only a deaf piece, but a piece they could develop in the coming years. To be fair, the Patriots have struggled to develop the wide receiver position for a number of years. However, Allen is a player who could come in and make an impact in short order.

It will certainly be interesting to see what the Patriots do at the wide receiver position. However, there is a need to upgrade them regardless. The organization has several different directions that it can go in, and different avenues it can explore.
