The Indianapolis Colts had cornerbacks Charvarius Ward and Sauce Gardner in the secondary for the 2025 NFL season, but injuries prevented either player from getting much game time in their first season with the organization.
Ward, who signed a three-year, $54 million deal with the team in the 2025 free agency, suffered three concussions in the previous season, forcing the player to shut down for the rest of the season (players who enter concussion protocol three times in a single season are required to be sidelined).
Gardner, whom the Colts acquired at the 2025 trade deadline in exchange for first-round picks and a player, only featured in four games for the team after dealing with an ankle injury.
Both players are set to be ready for the 2026 season, but Indy is taking an approach that would add some depth to the cornerback position.

Charvarius Ward and Sauce Gardner weren’t the only cornerbacks on the Indianapolis Colts secondary that suffered injuries. Justin Walley, who Indy selected in the third round of the 2025 draft, tore his ACL in training camp, preventing him from playing in his rookie season.
Needing some depth in case the Colts defense gets dealt another bad hand, the team is reportedly meeting with cornerbacks ahead of the draft.
According to Aaron Wilson, Indianapolis has virtually met with NC State cornerback Devon Marshall.
Marshall has played the last two seasons with the Wolfpack and recorded the most pass deflections in the ACC in 2025, with 16.
According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks have a 58.2 pass rating when targeting Marshall. The publication also graded the cornerback as the 22nd-best player at his respective position in the country, with an overall grade of 86.1.
In his two seasons with NC State, the CB has logged 23 pass deflections and 4 interceptions, while recording 83 total tackles.
PFF tabbed Marshall as the 151st-best prospect and the 20th-best cornerback in the upcoming draft.
If the injuries in the cornerback room rack up again for the Colts in the 2026 season, Devon Marshall could be set have a lot of playing time under defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Lou Anarumo will get a familiar face for the 2026 season, with the Indianapolis Colts signing cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt to a one-year deal.
The cornerback played under Anarumo from 2022 to the 2024 season with the Cincinnati Bengals, having his best season under him. Taylor-Britt started all 17 games in the 2024 season, while breaking up 16 passes, with 3 interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.
Reunited with his former defensive playcaller, the cornerback could have a bounce-back season and could be a key contributor to the Colts defense.
Meeting with Devon Marshall adds to the notion that the team is prioritizing depth in the secondary to help negate any injuries (long or short-term) and help stabilize what is considered one of the strongest positions for the Colts.
