Understanding the relationship between Tom Brady, the quarterback who won six Super Bowls for the New England Patriots, and the Las Vegas Raiders, the team in which he owns a five percent stake, has been the white whale of the NFL media.
Analysts and fans alike are obsessed with understanding how much influence the future Hall of Famer has over the football operations in Las Vegas. Sometimes it seems even the Raiders themselves are not positive.
Tuesday evening, fans were offered a little insight when multiple insiders reported that the seven-time Super Bowl champion would not only be in the building for pre-draft interviews, but would also be conducting them himself. Albert Breer broke the news to draft expert Todd McShay on “The Todd McShay Show.”
“What I would really be interested to hear about – which I don’t know – in that face-to-face interview with Brady yesterday,” Breer said.
“That was yesterday?” McShay interrupted, shocked.
“Yeah, that was yesterday,” Breer said. “How do the personalities mesh with Brady and (Fernando) Mendoza.
“I think for Tom, he’s acutely aware of how important the locker room is – and the makeup of the locker room and how the quarterback fits in the locker room. Nobody knows more about that than Tom Brady… I think that would be the final box to check.”
This is an interesting insight because it insinuates that the Raiders front office feels more than capable in their ability to scout talent and know what kind of football players they want to bring in. But when it comes to getting the right guys in the locker room, they pull out their ace in the hole.
Could Tom Brady be serving as the pseudo “Expert on Player Personnel”? It is important to note that he is not technically employed by the Raiders.
Several questions have been raised about the conflict of interest his relationship with the team may carry in relation to his current profession. So does his appearance at the first week of Raiders camp provide clarity or just more questions?
