Falcons sign Chiefs' Super Bowl champion to $5 million contract after retirement news

The Atlanta Falcons lost an offensive tackle on Wednesday when Kaleb McGary retired.

They didn't wait long at all to get another one -- they had a $5 million signing on the books a few hours later.

The newest Falcons lineman is Jawaan Taylor, who was a Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The deal was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, who added that there's also $1 million worth of incentives possible on the one-year contract.

The Chiefs released Taylor earlier this offseason to avoid a cap hit of $27.4 million for the season ahead. They saved about $20 million by making that move.

Taylor was originally a second-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida.

He played four seasons with the Jags before joining the Chiefs in 2023 and winning a Super Bowl that year with Kansas City.

Taylor played in 45 games for the Chiefs, all starts, but in the last season-plus, he started to get increased criticism for his play.

Between penalties and ineffectiveness, Taylor felt like part of the reason that the Chiefs' offense struggled, and that Patrick Mahomes had less-than-ideal time to throw the football.

The Falcons will be hoping they can find a better version of Taylor. The good news for them is they got him for a relative value compared to what the Chiefs would've paid him.

And with McGary gone, Taylor could wind up being quite important.
