Tottenham scouts were in attendance to watch a Sporting CP star in action vs. Arsenal in the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur have shown trust in Roberto De Zerbi to get them out of jail. With just seven games remaining, De Zerbi faces the clear objective of keeping the club afloat in the Premier League.
Behind the scenes, the Hotspur Way chiefs have already started planning for the summer transfer window. Regardless of what happens at the end of the season, changes in the squad are inevitable. There are several gaping holes in the squad that require addressing in the off-season. One of those is the lack of a reliable left-back.
Destiny Udogie has constantly struggled with injuries over the last two seasons. This has prevented the Italian from developing his game and becoming a more rounded left-back. He continues to lack consistency, and there remain concerns about whether Udogie would fit into De Zerbi’s system. Plus, January signing Souza is still raw and needs time to become a regular in the side. Thus, it comes as little surprise that Tottenham are already looking to bring in a new left-back.
Tottenham, Juventus scout Sporting CP star
Recent reports suggest Tottenham have made contact with Sporting CP over a move for Maxi Araujo. This comes after Spurs have been impressed by the left-back’s performances for Sporting CP throughout the season. The Uruguayan international has been one of the Lions’ best performers, which in turn has caught the attention of several European clubs.
Maxi Araujo was in action for Sporting CP against Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday evening. Tottenham scouts watched the 26-year-old complete 90 minutes, putting in a strong shift. Unfortunately, the left-back and his teammates couldn’t keep a clean sheet, as Arsenal nicked a stoppage-time winner via substitute Kai Havertz.
However, Spurs weren’t the only club monitoring Araujo’s performance vs. Arsenal. According to Italian journalist Mirko Di Natale on X, Juventus scouts were also in attendance at the Jose Alvalade Stadium to watch the South American talent. They ‘gathered new positive feedback’ on Araujo, and if Andrea Cambiaso is sold in the summer, the Sporting CP man would be an option to replace him in the squad.

Juventus could pose problem for Tottenham
It is natural for clubs to scout players, but Araujo emerging on the radar of Juventus would not go down well within the North London offices. They are fifth in the table and remain in the hunt to qualify for the Champions League. Getting Champions League football again would help the Turin giants attract quality players from Europe.
If Juventus up their ante to sign Araujo, that could be curtains for Tottenham. Spurs are not in a position to compete with the Serie A side, and in an ideal world, if Araujo has to pick one side from these two, he’d go with the latter. Plus, a summer move for the talented full-back from Uruguay is entirely contingent on Tottenham retaining their Premier League status.
For now, the Lilywhites can only continue monitoring the South American’s progress.
