On this day, Jesse Whatley, the renowned goalkeeper for Bristol Rovers, concluded an extraordinary run of consecutive appearances in the Football League. Whatley, who had been a stalwart for the Pirates, played his final match in a remarkable sequence of 246 consecutive League games. This streak began in August 1922 and included five full seasons and the first 36 matches of the subsequent season. His final appearance in this sequence was against Crystal Palace at Eastville. Following this match, Whatley requested to be left out of the team for the remainder of the season, allowing his deputy, Bert Densley, an opportunity to play.
