Man Utd could battle Manchester City for an elite midfield signing in the summer transfer window.

United have made a midfield refresh their priority for the end of the season and would like to sign at least two players in the key position. It is understood that United are prepared to break their club transfer record on an elite option, with a preference for signing someone with Premier League experience.

Nottingham Forest ace Anderson is viewed as the dream addition to the squad, while there is also interest in Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton. A move for Newcastle ace Sandro Tonali is viewed as unlikely due to the costs involved, with United also looking at Joao Gomes, Alex Scott and Mateus Fernandes as cheaper alternatives. A move for Anderson is far easier said than done, though, with strong interest from fierce rivals Man City.

Romano issues Elliot Anderson update

Manchester United and Man City could battle for Elliot Anderson in the summer transfer window, with Pep Guardiola's side reportedly already in negotiations over a possible move.

Speaking in his latest YouTube video, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano provided an update on United's pursuit of Anderson. "Many questions about the situation of Sandro Tonali, the situation of Elliot Anderson. Nothing has changed so far," he said.

"Sandro Tonali remains a name on the United shortlist, depending on the price, depending on the negotiations with Newcastle, depending on other clubs. He is also appreciated by Man City and Arsenal. Tonali for sure remains a name on Manchester United's shortlist.

"Then on Elliot Anderson, I keep telling you guys that Man City are on it. They want the player, they started negotiations with his camp. They have started on a deal to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

"Still, nothing advanced. Man City want to respect Nottingham Forest in their relegation battle. He is a crucial player, so now is not time to negotiate a transfer fee. We will have to see at the end of the season whether the will be in the Championship or in the Premier League. That will be important to understand the fee.

"Man City are on it, Manchester United also appreciate the player."
