Chelsea supporters were left stunned on Wednesday as fresh reports suggested the club is preparing a move for Darwin Núñez — a development that has sparked a wave of disbelief, frustration and, in some corners, dark humour across social media.
The former Liverpool striker, who has endured an inconsistent spell in the Premier League, is now being linked with a Stamford Bridge switch as CHELSEA
continue their search for attacking reinforcements. But if early online reaction is anything to go by, the rumour has not gone down well with large sections of the fanbase.
On X, hundreds of posts poured in within minutes of the story breaking, with many fans questioning both the logic and timing of the potential deal.
User @ProperBlueBlood posted: “We’ve survived some wild transfer windows but Núñez to Chelsea might finish me. What are we even doing? 😂💀”
Another supporter, @KaseyCFC, voiced frustration at the club’s recruitment strategy: ‘Every year we say we need a clinical striker. Every year we get linked to someone who can’t finish. Please I’m begging, not Núñez.”
Some fans expressed disbelief that the club would pursue a player known for erratic form in front of goal, @BridgeTalkPodcast wrote: “We’re not a rehab centre for misfiring strikers. How is this the plan? Someone explain.”
However, not everyone was vehemently opposed. A minority of fans argued that, despite his finishing inconsistencies, Núñez’s physical attributes and work rate could fit Chelsea’s high-intensity style.
User @BlueOptimist posted: “Unpopular take: Núñez under a different system might cook. The raw tools are there. Could be chaos in a good way.”
One widely shared message came from @CFCPainHub: “CHELSEA: We need composure. Also Chelsea: Let’s sign the most chaotic striker in the league.”
Another viral post simply read: “Núñez to Chelsea? Wake me up when the nightmare ends.”
The rumour also reignited wider conversations about recent recruitment decisions, with fans questioning whether the club is prioritising long-term squad building or opportunistic signings.
For now, the reported interest remains only speculation, but the online reaction has made one thing abundantly clear: many Chelsea supporters would need serious convincing should the deal progress.
As one fan summed it up bluntly: “If this happens, I’m logging off until next season.”
