Jets' Ty Simpson plans revealed involving Indiana star in 2026 NFL Draft

The New York Jets are counting on Geno Smith to be their quarterback in 2026.

But how about beyond? There's a lot more uncertainty.

The 2026 NFL Draft would be a possible time to solve QB, if the Jets liked any of the prospects enough.

They won't get Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, who the Raiders are expected to take No. 1 overall. Would the Jets consider Alabama's Ty Simpson?

"With three picks inside the top 33, the Jets will take a true best-player-available approach, but don't be surprised if they end Round 1 with three picks ... using none of them on a QB," ESPN's Jordan Reid wrote in a new article on Thursday. "The Jets are expected to be aggressive in boosting their wide receiver room, and Omar Cooper Jr. (Indiana) is one player they are reported to be extremely high on. They view him as an ideal complementary WR2 to Garrett Wilson."

In that same article, ESPN's Jets writer Rich Cimini predicted that New York would instead target a quarterback in the fourth round, and that it could be Penn State's Drew Allar.

"Keep an eye on Drew Allar (Penn State), who recently had a private workout at the Jets' facility," Cimini writes. "He's a developmental prospect with great size (6-foot-5, 228 pounds) and arm strength. Of course, this becomes moot if they pick Ty Simpson (Alabama) at Nos. 16 or 33."

Allar was viewed before the 2025 college football season as a potential first-round pick. Then the Nittany Lions had a nightmare season and Allar didn't even make it to the end before getting injured.

Now, he's viewed as less of a sure thing, but maybe in this weaker QB class, that's the kind of guy the Jets should take a chance on after loading up on players like Cooper and other best-players available with earlier selections.
