Former defender Rio Ferdinand has insisted he would welcome winger Marcus Rashford back at Manchester United, despite the player currently shining on loan at FC Barcelona.
According to reports in Spain, Barcelona are exploring ways to renegotiate the €30 million buyback clause embedded in Rashford’s loan agreement, believing the valuation no longer reflects his improved form since arriving at the Camp Nou. Rashford, who departed Manchester United last summer in search of a reset after a difficult season, has re-established himself as a key attacking figure in Catalonia, contributing goals, assists and pace across the front line.
Ferdinand, speaking on his podcast, argued that United should not hesitate if given the chance to bring the academy graduate back. He praised Rashford for rediscovering his confidence and insisted that his qualities—direct running, versatility and experience—remain valuable to a United squad undergoing transition
“Oh, what a goal, what a good goal, man.” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel: “Absolutely if Marcus Rashford is playing like that.
“That goal there is Marcus Rashford, right? That isn’t a surprise. We’re not sitting here going, ‘Oh my God, did you see Marcus Rashford, what he did the other day? Never knew he could do that.’
The buyback clause, negotiated as part of the loan structure, was inserted to protect United’s long-term interests should Rashford revive his form abroad. Barcelona’s interest in altering the clause is viewed as a sign of their desire to keep the England international permanently, though financial constraints may complicate any renegotiation.
Would Manchester United fans welcome Marcus Rashford back?
The reaction would likely be mixed. Many fans still hold deep affection for Rashford, a homegrown talent who produced memorable seasons and moments. That emotional connection, combined with his rejuvenated performances in Spain, could soften views and generate excitement about a potential return.
However, a portion of the fanbase grew frustrated with his form and body language prior to his loan move. Some supporters may question whether bringing him back fits United’s long-term rebuilding approach, especially if his performances in a different tactical environment don’t seamlessly translate back into the Premier League.
Ultimately, if Rashford returned with renewed hunger and consistency, a significant number of fans would likely embrace him again—especially if the €30m clause remains intact, making the deal a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for Manchester United.
