Mailbag: Could Thompson wear green dot?

**Patrik:** As far as intellect and versatility goes, I could see why you'd ponder this. And, to be honest, I wouldn't be entirely against it. The problem is not that it's nontraditional by coaching standards, it's _why_ it's nontraditional by coaching standards. The green dot is typically an inside linebacker, preferably the MIKE (middle LB), because he is the heart of the defensive operation. As such, the onus is often on that position to make sure everyone is lined up correctly and to communicate the play call, not a defensive back who, should someone on the defensive line be out of sorts, can't do much about it if they happen to be at free safety (or even box safety but in a cover look pre-snap). It's a great thought but, in execution, it's too risky to try and execute on a snap-to-snap basis.

**Tommy:** Hypothetically he could, but it's not very common and if I was running a team, I'd want my middle linebaacker to be the green dot just about every time. That's not a knock on Thompson's communication abilities, it's moreso the fact that the middle linebacker is in a central position on the defense and has the best spot to make pre-snap checks to every position group on the field, versus Thompson, who could be playing deep safety, and may not be able to cleanly deliver a message to the defensive line for example without being put out of position. Some teams have done it in the past and gotten away with it, but just in my opinion, I'd rather it be the mike.
