Premier League outfit‘start to celebrate’as gifted midfielder heads to Chelsea in big money move

Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly set to receive a financial wind-fall this summer after Chelsea agreed a deal in principle to sign Argentine midfielder Valentín Barco from RC Strasbourg, sources say — a move that would trigger a sell-on payment to the Seagulls thanks to a 10 per cent clause in the original transfer agreement.

Barco, 21, is understood to have agreed personal terms on a six-year contract with CHELSEA ahead of the proposed summer transfer, having impressed during his time at Strasbourg where he was converted from full-back into a central midfielder.

The Argentina international’s development in Ligue 1 has attracted interest from several clubs, but the Blues are now widely tipped to secure his signature when the transfer window opens.

Brighton inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause when they allowed Barco to join Strasbourg — initially on loan before a permanent deal was struck — and that clause is expected to yield a significant payment for the south coast club.

With reports indicating Chelsea may pay in excess of £40 million for the Strasbourg star, Brighton’s cut could run into millions of pounds, providing a timely boost ahead of their own summer plans.

The potential wind-fall has led to amusement among some Brighton supporters and pundits, given Barco’s limited impact during his spell at the Amex Stadium before his move to France. Having joined from Boca Juniors in 2024, Barco made only a handful of appearances before departing on loan, later completing a permanent transfer to Strasbourg.

For CHELSEA, Barco represents a long-term project for manager Liam Rosenior, who worked with the midfielder during their shared time at Strasbourg. The Blues are planning a summer recruitment drive that blends youth and experience, with Barco viewed as a versatile asset who can operate in midfield or wide areas.

While the transfer has not been formally announced, the reports of its completion and the associated sell-on payment have already reverberated across European football, underlining how smart contract clauses can yield dividends for clubs like Brighton that excel in player development and negotiation.
