Across the NFL, every team is putting the finishing touches on its preparations for the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. The Detroit Lions are part of that group, and after missing the playoffs entirely last season, it’s clear that the front office has some work to do when it comes to fine-tuning this team’s roster.
And yet, free agency is still active, with rumors continuing to rumble in this department as well. While several of the big-name players left on the market seem set to wait until after the draft to sign with new teams, there are a handful of bargain-bin options could sign immediately. According to a new report, it looks like the Lions brought one of them to town earlier this week.
Lions Bring Jay Tufele in for Free Agent Visit
Tufele initially broke into the NFL as a fourth-round pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. To this point, though, he has struggled to find a consistent role for himself in the league, as he’s also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets through his first five years in the pros.
For the most part, Tufele is used as a stout run defender who can clog up running lanes in the middle of the line. Tufele is doing the dirty work that helps make the lives of his teammates easier, which means his numbers often aren’t that impressive. His best season came in 2024 with the Bengals, as he picked up 15 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and one pass breakup in 13 games of action.
Last season, Tufele spent the year with the Jets, but he didn’t make a similar impact, as he had just 12 tackles in 12 games of work. New York doesn’t seem to be in a rush to bring him back to town, but he may have a new suitor in Detroit, as the NFL’s transaction log revealed that the team brought him to town for a free agent visit on Tuesday.
“On Tuesday, the NFL transaction wire showed that the Lions hosted defensive tackle Jay Tufele for a visit. Tufele spent last season with the New York Jets and has played five total NFL seasons,” Christian Booher wrote for Sports Illustrated.

For the past few years, the Lions have been hard at work trying to get Aidan Hutchinson some help along their defensive line. Detroit has a solid supporting cast, with Alim McNeill and Levi Onwuzurike leading the way at the defensive tackle position. The problem is that this group has frequently gotten hit hard by the injury bug, which has created problems for Dan Campbell and the rest of the coaching staff.
Tufele isn’t exactly a game-breaking addition, but he’s the sort of depth option that the Lions could lean on when needed. He doesn’t offer much as a pass rusher, but using Tufele as a rotational run defender could help the team’s top guys, McNeill and Onwuzurike, stay fresh for the entire 17-game campaign. This certainly wouldn’t be a flashy move, but it could be a solid piece of business for Detroit if the price is right.
