The match officials have been appointed for Manchester United’s upcoming game against Leeds.
It seems a long time ago now, but Manchester United’s last result was overshadowed by referee and VAR decisions.
While the PGMOL insist the decisions in United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth were applied correctly, most fans watching the game felt very differently.
It does mean there will be plenty of scrutiny on the upcoming game with Leeds, a game set to be televised live on Monday Night Football.
The Premier League have now confirmed Paul Tierney will officiate the match as referee.

Paul Tierney has been named referee for Manchester United’s clash with Leeds at Old Trafford.

Dan Cook, Ian Hussin will be the assistant referees, with Sam Barrott the fourth official, per the Premier League’s official outlet. Paul Howard and Sian Massey-Ellis will handle the VAR responsibility.
Tierney has history with United. He awarded the Red Devils a penalty in the 2023 FA Cup Final, a 2-1 defeat to City.
But then in the Premier League game the following season he awarded City a ridiculous spotkick for a Rasmus Hojlund foul on Rodri, after consulting VAR.
He has refereed United 25 times in total in his career, with the Red Devils winning 14.
But he has not taken charge of a United game since the 2023/24 season, a 1-0 win for Arsenal at Old Trafford.
In fact, the last three United games Tierney has overseen have all been defeats. A lot has changed, with Erik ten Hag the manager at the time.
A far more positive omen is that Tierney refereed Manchester United’s 5-1 win on opening day against Leeds in 2021, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick.
In the 25 United games that Tierney has officiated, he has never sent off a Manchester United player.

High pressure game for both clubs
The match between Manchester United and Leeds features a historic rivalry, and both clubs are playing for real stakes in their respective seasons.
Michael Carrick’s Red Devils are playing to secure a top five spot to secure Champions League qualification.
Leeds are battling for survival in the Premier League, after being dragged into a relegation fight with Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and West Ham.
With rivals set to play before the Monday night fixture, there will be additional pressure on both teams to get a result.
And hopefully the match is decided by players, and not officials.
