Murillo Brings Instant Impact That Chelsea Needs
Chelsea are missing an experienced defender at the back. Now, Murillo looks like the kind of defender who can walk straight into the starting eleven. He can fix problems without needing a long settling period as well. The Nottingham Forest centre-back has already shown his game in the Premier League. He can handle physical battles, read danger early, and stay composed under pressure. This is exactly what the Blues have lacked in the recent seasons.
Murillo’s numbers back up the talks too. He averaged 2.6 tackles and 4.9 clearances per game in the 2024 season and has a pass accuracy above 85%, as per stats from FBref. These are not just good stats, they show a defender who is constantly involved and impacted games. He also has the ability to carry the ball out of defence. That is something modern football managers demand from their centre-backs.
That said, the Brazil international solves the Blues’ problems instantly. This is huge as Liam Rosenior’s side cannot afford another season of defensive instability. With Levi Colwill out by an ACL injury, the need is for a leader who can organize the line. They want a player who will communicate clearly, and bring calmness in the team.

The interest in Karim Coulibaly shows Chelsea are still thinking about the future. As per reports, the 18-year-old Werder Bremen defender is turning heads across Europe. Coulibaly has made 22 appearances this season and scored once. This is a good return for a young centre-back still learning his game. That is especially in a league as demanding as the Premier League.
In addition, Werder Bremen value him between €40-50 million. This is a huge fee for a player who is yet to prove himself at the highest level. As per Transfermarkt, his defensive duel success rate sits around 62%. For Chelsea, signing another young defender might make sense for the future. But, it does little to fix the current issues at the club. That said, the last thing the team needs is another player learning on the job while results don’t come.

The race for Coulibaly is also intense, with clubs like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly tracking him. Given that, this could push the price even higher.
In the end, this is about experience and talent at the same time. If Rosenior’s side want to compete seriously again, they cannot afford another risk in such a key position. So, it will be interesting to see how the Blues’ make their moves during the summer window.
