The Dallas Cowboys have clear defensive needs for the 2026 NFL Draft.
To solve one of them, Jerry Jones might have to pull off a trade to leapfrog the Kansas City Chiefs.
That's because the Cowboys and Chiefs could both use the same position, cornerback, and potentially the same player, LSU's Mansoor Delane.
The Chiefs are slated to pick No. 9, with the Cowboys at No. 12.
That's why in his latest mock draft, The Sporting News' senior NFL writer Vinnie Iyer predicts that the Cowboys will trade up to the No. 8 spot, currently held by the New Orleans Saints.
"The Cowboys love Delane but should know they need to move into the top 10 to get him and have that flexibility with two first-rounders," Iyer writes. "It would make sense to jump the Chiefs, the other team heavily tied to taking the best corner in the draft, a potential shutdown superstar in Delane."

Of course, if the Chiefs started to hear inklings of this happening, they could counteract it with their own trade up.
Both Dallas and Kansas City are in fascinating positions for the first round, because they each have two first-round picks. That creates useful combinations to try and trade up the board to land who they want most.
Given their overlapping needs, the Cowboys and Chiefs may end up being a crucial narrative during the opening round of this year's draft. And only one of them can get the best cornerback available.
