Italian football legend Marco Materazzi has told Chelsea to make a big change at the top by hiring Como 1907 head coach Cesc Fabregas to replace Liam Rosenior, who is under fire. The winner of the 2006 World Cup believes the Spaniard’s methods would be a great fit for the young core Todd Boehly has assembled at Stamford Bridge.
Rosenior is getting under more pressure, as Chelsea are not in the top five of the Premier League and are getting further away from qualifying for the Champions League. The former Brighton manager has struggled to match the rhythm Enzo Maresca established last season, when the Blues won the FIFA Club World Cup in New York after beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Materazzi, who watched Chelsea’s recent lacklustre performance against Everton up close, was not impressed by what he saw from Rosenior’s team.
“I was at Everton against Chelsea. I was at the FIFA Club World Cup final. With Enzo Maresca, they were a totally different team. What I saw in Liverpool was an easy game for Everton. Chelsea did not impress me.
“I think they have to change. They are a young team and I don’t know if they have the best manager for what Chelsea need right now. They have to try for Cesc Fabregas this summer.
“Chelsea are the best club for Cesc Fabregas because they have young players who will follow his words immediately.”
Fàbregas Keeps Doing Great Things In Serie A With Como
Materazzi admitted that it would be hard to get Fabregas away from Como because they have their own goals, but the Chelsea legend has received praise for his work in Italy. The 38-year-old Spaniard has turned the Lombardy team into one of Serie A’s most exciting teams since he took over.
He played 198 games for the Blues between 2014 and 2019. His philosophy of playing with the ball and his willingness to trust players who have come through the academy have earned him praise from all over Italian football.
Reports say that Chelsea’s top brass will look at Rosenior’s job over the next few weeks. The upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United could be a chance for the troubled head coach to save his job. If things don’t get better, Fàbregas could be at the top of the list of coaches Chelsea want to sign when the summer transfer window opens.
