Popular sportswriter claims Dianna Russini outrage is ‘double standard’

Legendary sports media writer Jeff Pearlman is defending The Athletic’s Dianna Russini after intimate photos of her and NFL coach Mike Vrabel emerged in recent days.

The NFL world is buzzing with rumors about a recent Arizona trip where Russini and Vrabel were spotted together. However, Pearlman is giving Russini the benefit of the doubt based on her “high-quality reputation.”

Pearlman is sharing his thoughts on the confusing situation after photos of Russini and Vrabel went viral this week. Social media certainly has its own theories about the NFL reporter and New England Patriots head coach.

DIANNA RUSSINI SET BACK WOMEN WORKING IN SPORTS!

“It just confirms what a lot of guys already think! So all the other really talented women, they got set back by this, to no fault of their own!” – Craig Carton@craigcartonlive @TyJohnsonNews #NFL #DiannaRussini pic.twitter.com/GzDfe4GAnL

The photos leaked via the New York Post certainly bode well for the NFL reporter or Super Bowl champion. However, Pearlman isn’t judging Russini in the odd situation because he doesn’t want to “jump to conclusions.”

“I don’t think we knew what was really going on. It’s a bunch of still photos, we don’t know. And people nowadays jump to conclusions so quickly, myself included. First minute I saw it I was like, ‘what is she doing’ but I don’t actually know what’s going on,” Pearlman recently said, via Awful Announcing.

Russini and Vrabel continue to deny any wrongdoing from their time spent together in Sedona. Both sports figures claim to have spent the weekend with friends at the luxury hotel.

Page Six revealed several photos of Russini and Vrabel holding hands, hugging and spending time close together near a hot tub. That’s sparked significant outrage online given that both parties are married to other spouses.

However, Pearlman claims that the situation would be much different if Vrabel’s encounter were with another man and not Russini.

“It’s just such a painful double standard. The other thing is she has a very long, high-quality reputation. And I’m just not willing to jump in the ‘oh there is something nefarious going on here, they’re having an affair, they’re having a scandal, blah blah blah. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m not taking a bunch of photos and doing what we do in 2026 jumping all over it.”

It’s clear that the story isn’t going anywhere considering how invested NFL fans are in both the Patriots head coach and Russini. The Athletic’s senior reporter figures to play a huge role in 2026 NFL Draft coverage in the coming weeks.
