Man Utd enter£100m race to sign Premier League star, one massive reason Ineos must avoid - Opinion

Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa this summer, but it has the potential to be a huge error from Ineos.

This summer, it seems fairly clear that Manchester United want to sign a left winger, and Morgan Rogers can now be considered an option.

He joins United’s shortlist, which consists of Yan Diomande at the pinnacle. Meanwhile, United are also looking at Iliman Ndiaye from Everton as a Premier League-proven option.

Signing Rogers would blow both of these deals out of the water financially, yet it might be the riskiest of all.

Manchester United enter race to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa

This summer, Rogers is open to leaving Villa, with his reputation massive now compared to when he joined them. Now, ahead of the summer, the race for his signature is on.

According to The Times and The Telegraph, Rogers is already sparking a wide-open race for his signature with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea all joining United in the transfer fight.

Villa’s valuation is likely to exceed £80m, with the interest levels meaning the price will inevitably rise, with an initial £90m expected, although he could end up costing £100m or more.

Meanwhile, Ben Jacobs has added that Rogers is liked by both Michael Carrick and Jason Wilcox, as they both worked with him in the past at Middlesbrough and Man City, respectively.

It would be an exciting transfer, sure to sell shirts and grab headlines. But is he worth that amount of money?

Signing Rogers is a move Ineos could seriously end up regretting, with the £100m potential fee not reflecting the player he is.

Since the turn of the year, Rogers has scored just three goals in 20 games for club and country, including none in his last 10. In fact, this season, of his eight Premier League goals, six came in just three games with braces against United, West Ham, and Leeds.

Player Games Goals Assists

🇧🇷 Matheus Cunha 28 7 2

🇨🇲 Bryan Mbeumo 26 9 3

🇩🇰 Patrick Dorgu 7 3 1

These were in the span of an eight-game stretch in which he also got two assists, which means in the other 23 games this season, he managed just two goals and three assists, which is a record that wouldn’t be worth £50m, let alone double that.

Assuming Rogers has a drop off after his big move, as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo did, he would very quickly be labelled ‘flop’ by the media.

In the Premier League this season, per 90, Rogers created just 1.31 chances (50th percentile among wingers), 1.11 dribbles (51st percentile) and an expected goals of just 0.19 (55th percentile).

Signing Rogers to rotate and provide depth across positions would be wise, but not for anywhere near this price point. This, without even acknowledging, he would have the same hindrances on the wing as Cunha.

Ineos must steer clear.
