McGeehan and Donegal ready to embrace Breffini test

BY MATTHEW WILSON

DONEGAL ladies assistant manager Bernard McGeehan is expecting a stern test in this Saturday’s National Football League Division 2 Final against Cavan.

Following a three-year absence from Division 1, Donegal secured their place back in the top tier of ladies football courtesy of a victory over Wexford in the final round of fixtures.

The win over the Leinster outfit has not only earned James Daly’s outfit promotion from Division 2 but also a place in the competition’s showpiece against the Breffni County this weekend.

When the two sides met earlier in the league campaign, Cavan ran out narrow two-point winners on their trip to Fr Tierney Park in Ballyshannon.

There was very little between the two teams on that occasion and with a piece of silverware up for grabs at St Tiernach’s Park in Clones this weekend, McGeehan is expecting the latest meeting to be no different.

By securing back-to-back promotions, the Donegal assistant manager feels that Cavan are a side with the wind in their sails at the moment and stated that it’s a contest that they’re very much looking forward to.

“It’s a lovely position to be in when you already have promotion secured. It’s lovely to get a cup and we want that cup but promotion is the big one.

“We’ve achieved that so it makes Saturday’s game something that we can look forward to and embrace.

“It’ll be challenging, there’s no doubt about that. Cavan are coming into it with huge momentum behind them, they won Division 3 last year. When you get teams in that vein then they’re hard to stop.

“They’ve had a superb league but that’ll all go out the window come Saturday, it’ll be who performs on the day.

“We feel that we’ve prepared well, we feel that we’re in a good place heading into it.

“No doubt Cavan will be the same and it’ll be fine lines that will decide it. We’re happy with where we’re at and we’re very much looking forward to it.”
