An award celebrating inspirational people has been created in the memory of Joe Thompson. The Joe Thompson Legacy Award will be handed out at this year's Football Black List celebration.
Joe was a multiple winner at the Football Black List, which is an initiative that recognises the achievements of black individuals across all areas of football. The event honours players, coaches, executives, media professionals and grassroots leaders.
A former Manchester United and Rochdale FC player, Joe passed away in 2025 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma for a third time. The cancer had spread to his lungs and he tragically died at just 36 years of age.
Prior to his death, Joe inspired many with his remarkable story. He beat cancer twice during his career as a professional footballer before becoming a highly respected motivational speaker and broadcaster.
His courage, positivity and determination touched many within football and beyond. The new award will celebrate individuals who embody those same qualities of resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
The recipient of the inaugural Joe Thompson Legacy Award will be announced at the Football Black List celebration on Tuesday, April 14 at a ceremony in Westminster, where leaders from across the football industry and the Black community will come together.
The awardee was selected by Joe’s wife, Chantelle Thompson, and his close friend Aaron Burns. Recently, Chantelle announced that she is expecting Joe's baby following IVF treatment using frozen embryos.
Speaking about the news, Chantelle said: "It just means absolutely everything. I know it's never going to replace Joe obviously. Joe's Joe. But to be able to bring his baby into the world again is beautiful."
The Joe Thompson Legacy Award will be presented on the evening by Joe’s friends from across the game.
Leon Mann MBE, co-founder of the Football Black List, said: “Joe was an amazing human and someone who offered me a lot of support as a friend and colleague. He was always asking how he could support the Football Black List to help us grow our impact.
“This new award in his name will help to highlight more amazing people of African and Caribbean heritage with similar qualities to Joe. We can’t wait to announce the winner on the night and amplify their story.”
