Auston Trusty’s route to Celtic has taken him through a few different dressing rooms, but his short spell around Arsenal left a clear mark. It wasn’t about minutes on the pitch. It was about seeing what is expected at the very top level.
The defender spent part of pre-season with Mikel Arteta’s squad before moving on. He didn’t feature in competitive games, but the environment alone gave him something to take forward. Training standards, attention to detail, and how quickly things can turn all stood out.
That period came during Arsenal’s tour of the United States, where Trusty was part of the group around the MLS All-Star fixture. On paper, it was a friendly. The scoreline backed that up. What followed after told a different story.
Trusty’s recollection gives an insight into how little margin there is at that level. Even in a game that looked comfortable from the outside, the demands didn’t drop. That was the moment it clicked for him.
He said: (Goal), “I remember we won 5-0 and Arteta was so mad at us.
“He was so mad at the team. He thought guys weren’t trying. That’s when I knew the level was different. This was an MLS All-Star game, a preseason friendly.
“The fact that we won 5-0 and still had things that we were screamed at for in that game? Arteta said we weren’t trying.
“It’s a whole different mindset, and that was my first experience of, ‘Whoa, this is a different culture’.”
That mindset is something Trusty has carried into his time at Celtic. The expectation doesn’t change just because the game looks under control. Switching off for a moment can shift everything.
At Celtic Park, that shows up in a different way. Teams come in and sit deep. The tempo has to stay high. Defenders have to stay alert even when they are not involved for long spells.
Trusty has had to deal with that side of the game this season. There are periods where Celtic dominate the ball, then moments where one mistake can undo that work. Staying focused through both is part of the job.
With the run-in now underway, those details matter more. Every game carries weight, and there is no room to drift. The lessons from that Arsenal spell are simple, but they fit this stage of the season.
