Why Man Utd ace believes mentality is major key to future success after Sir Alex Ferguson era

Bruno Fernandes has revealed where he sees Manchester United in the current football landscape after Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013.

Manchester United have been battling to climb back to the top of English football after Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford at the end of the 2012-13 season.

All 13 of the Red Devils’ Premier League titles came under the 84-year-old iconic ex-United manager and the club have struggled in the aftermath of his retirement.

The Premier League club have had six permanent managers since Ferguson, with the Man Utd head coach role currently vacant after Ruben Amorim’s January sacking.

Bruno Fernandes on what Man Utd fans mean for the Red Devils in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era of the Premier League club

Manchester United have seen both the highs and lows since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, including winning major silverware under different managers so far.

However, the Red Devils’ trophy haul post-Ferguson has been sporadic and Man Utd have lacked the consistency to mount an effective Premier League title challenge.

Fernandes was asked if United had truly come ‘back’ in the new era after Ferguson and the Red Devils skipper highlighted the importance of United fans to the club.

“First of all, you have to understand the place you are, how much it means to be here, not just for everyone on the outside,” he told Men in Blazers.

“When we see fans, wherever [they are] around the world, we know how much it means for every player that has the chance and the opportunity to represent this club.

“And obviously, I think to achieve it, this club will always be winning trophies and that’s all every player wants to do when it comes to this club.”

Fernandes on the ‘position’ that no Man Utd player can find themselves in at Old Trafford

United have only finished twice in the Premier League table since Ferguson, which came during the Old Trafford reigns of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils have not secured consistent Champions League football in the post- Ferguson era either, but Fernandes was keen to stress the importance of mentality at Man Utd right now.

“You could be in the worst position as you want, but there is no player that comes to this club and never thinks about winning the Premier League, the Champions League, the Carabao Cup, anything that you could be involved [in],” Fernandes added.

“You are going to always think that at this club you can achieve anything.”

Man Utd are currently third in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are back in action on Monday evening against Leeds United at Old Trafford.
