Chelsea are monitoring two Premier League centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Writing on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips named Nottingham Forest’s Murillo and Brighton’s Jan Paul Van Hecke as possible targets to reinforce the middle of the defence.

Murillo has been linked on and off with a move to Stamford Bridge over the past few years, but Forest’s precarious position above the relegation zone means there could be a chance to sign him this summer.

It has been claimed that the Brazilian could be available for around £50m, although the likes of Liverpool have also been mentioned as potential suitors.

Signing van Hecke would have certain complications

When the Dutchman was linked with a move away from Brighton last year, it was reported that the Seagulls wanted at least £60m for the centre-half.

Van Hecke is out of contract at the end of next season, so there could be a chance to buy him for a fee below that amount this summer.

However, it has to be pointed that the defender and Joao Pedro are not exactly best of friends. One of the reasons why the Brazilian was allowed to leave Brighton last year was due to a bust-up he had with van Hecke.

It is not known whether the pair have resolved their differences since then, so that may have to be addressed if a bid is made for the Brighton defender.

Chelsea want to strengthen multiple positions

While most fans would agree that a new centre-back is a top priority for the summer, it appears that the Blues’ recruitment team are also hoping to reinforce at least four other areas.

Signing a goalkeeper, another left back, a left winger and a striker are also believed to be on the agenda.
