Flamethrowing Red Sox Prospect Dominates In Career-Best Outing

Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and Kyson Witherspoon get most of the buzz as the Boston Red Sox's top pitching prospects -- and deservedly so.

Just don't forget about Juan Valera.

One of the most electrifying arms in the system, Valera struck out a career-high nine batters while allowing zero runs over five innings for Single-A Greenville on Thursday night. It was the best outing of his career, and came after he struck out seven across 3 1/3 innings in his season debut.

Check out highlights from Valera's outing in this video from Beyond the Monster's Hunter Noll:

Valera, currently ranked fifth on SoxProspects.com, has the physical profile and pitch mix to develop as a true starter. He still has much to prove, especially after missing much of last season due to a right-arm injury, but the 19-year-old is someone to watch.

Here's the scouting summary on Valera from SoxProspects:

"High-variance pitching prospect with the ceiling of a mid-rotation starter. Has a lot of development remaining and reliever risk, but is one of the highest-ceiling arms in the Red Sox system. Stuff has steadily improved since he signed to the point at which he became arguably the system's top pitching prospect below Triple-A. Has the build you look for along with premium velocity. Secondary arsenal is a work in progress, but changeup and breaking balls flash potential. Continued refinement of secondaries will be key for him to reach his potential."

Valera likely is at least two seasons away from contending for a spot in the big leagues. But don't be surprised if he lands on national top-100 lists by the end of this season.
