Nico Schlotterbeck makes final call on Borussia Dortmund future amid Man Utd links

Nico Schlotterbeck has committed his future to Borussia Dortmund after being linked with a potential summer move to Manchester United.

Manchester United are unlikely to prioritise the search for a new centre-back in the summer. That doesn’t mean they won’t take up any opportunities if a player of interest becomes available.

Harry Maguire’s new contract has reduced United’s need to add a central defender to the squad this summer, but there is a feeling of uncertainty with Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez’s track record with injuries.

United also have younger options at centre-back, still at the early stages of their development, such as Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro.

Man Utd-linked Nico Schlotterbeck agrees new Borussia Dortmund deal

Although United are prioritising the need to revamp the midfield ahead of Casemiro’s exit this summer, it is understood that Ineos will try to improve other areas of the team.

A new left-back is needed to provide competition for Luke Shaw, while a winger on the same flank could be on the agenda with Marcus Rashford expected to leave on a permanent deal once his Barcelona loan comes to an end.

However, this hasn’t stopped United from looking at centre-backs who could become available.

What did Nico Schlotterbeck say about his new Borussia Dortmund contract?

Schlotterbeck was linked with multiple clubs before signing a new deal at Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old, who stands at 6’3″, is a physically imposing figure with traits that wouldn’t look out of place in the Premier League.

Speaking about his new contract, Schlotterbeck said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have extended my contract with BVB.

“I deliberately took my time with it because it’s an important decision for me. We had good discussions throughout, but it wasn’t a process that was completed in a week or two.

“The management presented me with a good plan, and I know what I have at this club. My goal is to win titles together with Borussia Dortmund.”
