Newcastle United transfers: Eddie Howe has responded to the suggestion Newcastle United may have to sell some big players this summer.
Newcastle United are preparing for yet another busy but uncertain summer as they prepare for the 2026/27 season while dealing with the fallout from the current season.
The Magpies have seven games left to try and sneak into the European places despite currently sitting 12th in the table.
But after agreeing the biggest sale in Premier League history that saw Alexander Isak join Liverpool for £130million last summer, more big sales could be on the horizon this coming transfer window.
Newcastle United set to sell a big player this summer?
Chief executive officer David Hopkinson said during Newcastle’s recent financial results meeting: “Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well. Buying well does not necessarily mean spending the most money.”
On the potential of big money signings this summer, Hopkinson added: “We can do that. But we might not be able to do that without selling somebody.”
The likes of Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon have been linked with potential exits from Newcastle this summer. Arsenal and Manchester United have both been linked with Tonali while the Gunners have also been credited with an interest in Gordon and Manchester City’s interest in Livramento is well-documented.
Hopkinson wouldn’t rule out any sale but instead admitted any exit would be done so on the club’s terms and to maximise the profit.
“Eddie is experienced, thoughtful and understands squad cost management and the need to maximise our competitive opportunity,” Hopkinson added. “Eddie wants the exact same things we do and we have lots of good dialogue with him. What I can tell you is he is aligned and understands this.”

Eddie Howe responds
On Friday, Howe spoke to the media for the first time since the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland just under three weeks ago.
Hopkinson’s comments involving the prospect of potentially losing another big name player, were put to the Newcastle boss.
But Howe admitted he would have ‘no issues’ working within the financial parameters required, even if it means a big player leaving.
“If that’s the reality, and David will know more than me on that side, then that’s the reality,” Howe said. “I’ve got no issues working with the conditions that the club set, finances dictate.
“I’ve never had an issue with that throughout my career. As long as that’s made clear to everyone on the outside and the expectations are aligned within that. I don’t think you can have expectations that warp reality.
“Everything has to be aligned for the players to enter the pitch and be in their best place, where they’re relaxed and not under undue pressure - I think that’s fundamentally important.”
