Broncos owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner buying 40 percent of Rockies

Broncos owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner are expanding their reach — exactly in the direction many Denver sports fans wanted: toward the Colorado Rockies.

They’re not taking over the team, but as first reported by Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post, the Broncos owners will acquire a 40-percent share of the Rockies.

They will be minority shareholders in the Rockies, and Dick Monfort will remain the majority owner, but this gives the Penner Sports Group a significant chunk of one of Denver’s other major professional sports teams as their sports involvement becomes more than just a one-team operation, but a portfolio.

The Penners will not have any day-to-day involvement in the Rockies, but the cash infusion to the club is expected to help in player acquisition and retention — as well as to retire all remaining debt held by the club.

It will also provide needed funds in the wake of the loss of local television revenue following the dissolution of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain following the 2023 season, leading to the team broadcasting its games through MLB.TV and a handful of local and regional providers.

“We are excited to expand our commitment to the Denver sports community through a minority partnership with the Colorado Rockies,” the Penners said in a statement. “This investment from Penner Sports Group reflects our deep appreciation for what the Rockies mean to this region, the passion of their fans and our confidence in the future of the franchise.”

ROCKIES AREN’T THE ONLY MLB TEAM IN WHICH A MEMBER OF THE WALTON-PENNER GROUP HAS A STAKE

This is not the only involvement of the Walton-Penner group in MLB ownership. Fellow Broncos owner Rob Walton, Carrie’s father, bought 10 percent of the Arizona Diamondbacks two years ago, a purchase that only came to light last month.

Much of Walton’s investment went towards improvements to Chase Field, the Diamondbacks’ home stadium in downtown Phoenix, which is now in its 29th season.
