Chelsea have made a clear call on Josh Acheampong despite his low minutes this season. The club still sees him as a key part of their long-term plan.
Chelsea stance shows long-term belief in Josh Acheampong
As per the reports, Chelsea have made it clear that Josh Acheampong is not available for transfer, even after strong interest from clubs like Bayern Munich and Crystal Palace. The 19-year-old has found it hard for regular starts in recent months, but the club’s decision shows a deeper belief in his full potential rather than his current role in the squad.
Football wise, this is a clear sign that Chelsea are not looking to make the same mistakes. In recent years, the club has let several young players leave too soon, and many of them later became top players elsewhere. Acheampong’s skill as a versatile defender who can play many roles makes him a key player, especially for a team that has had defensive issues this season.
He has played only six times in the league since the start of 2025, and in numbers, his game time has been limited. But those numbers don’t tell the whole story, because he made strong impact earlier in matches when he stayed calm against top players and changed his way of playing on the fly.

Maresca’s praise highlights tactical value
Former manager Enzo Maresca’s comments still carry weight when judging Acheampong’s role in the squad. After a strong display against Legia Warsaw in April 2025, Maresca openly praised the youngster’s versatility and reading of the game.
“The one that I fell in love with tonight was Josh Acheampong,”Maresca said. He added that a good player must be able to perform well in different positions, something Josh Acheampong showed by playing as a full-back, midfielder and central defender in the same match.
In modern systems, teams highly value such adaptability. Blues as a team often change their defensive shape depending on the opponent, and players who can play in different roles during a match offer a clear edge. Acheampong’s game IQ and ability to move between positions make him more than just a backup player.
In simple terms, he is not just covering positions, he is solving issues on the pitch. That is a quality Chelsea do not want to lose, even if it means passing on short-term transfer money.

Limited minutes raise questions amid Premier League push
Despite the club’s strong stance, the lack of playing time remains a concern. Chelsea are currently pushing for a higher finish in the Premier League table, with competition for places rising across the defensive line. The right flank is still run by players such as Reece James and Malo Gusto, with little room for rotation.
Chelsea might sign a senior centre-back in the upcoming window. That decision could further cut Acheampong’s chances of breaking into the starting lineup on a consistent basis. From a development point of view, this creates a hard balance. Retaining him keeps hold of a potentially high-impact player, but limited minutes can slow his growth at an important stage. Clubs like Crystal Palace reportedly saw him as a ready replacement for Marc Guehi, which suggests there is real interest in his abilities elsewhere.
The Blues only responded in the context of that broader strategy. They focus on long-term squad building rather than quick fixes. Acheampong’s past games, including several strong ones against big clubs and key moments in key matches this season, appear to have made a clear impact on those making decisions.
For now, Chelsea believe in Josh Acheampong, even if his current role does not yet reflect that belief.
