WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Signature, a Kentucky Derby-style celebration held during Azalea Festival weekend, returns Saturday, April 11, for its fifth year to benefit the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation and the Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy of Wilmington.
Organizers, Highsmith Branding Group and DyHard Productions, say the event was created to bring together family, friends and community members of multicultural backgrounds during one of Wilmington’s busiest weekends.
“The Signature will be a continued annual event supporting community charities and recognizing distinguished community leaders in Wilmington,” said Ronnie Highsmith, president of Highsmith Branding Group. “The funds raised will not only help impact those most in need but also support programs to motivate youth to be leaders in their respective communities.”
This year’s program includes awards honoring Mayor Bill Saffo and Hilda DeLeon, principal of the International School at Gregory. Saffo is scheduled to receive the 2026 Signature Award of Appreciation from 3:30-3:45 p.m., followed by DeLeon receiving the 2026 Signature Community Excellence Award from 3:45-4 p.m.
Former Ashley High School standout and Wilmington native Alex Highsmith, a linebacker for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, will attend as a special guest.
The event will feature derby fashion, including hats and fascinators, best-dressed contests, music and dancing, giveaways, signature drinks and an outdoor patio cigar lounge. The event is open to guests 21 and older.
Tickets include heavy hors d’oeuvres for VIP guests, signature drinks and an afternoon of dancing and entertainment, organizers said. Advance tickets are sold out, but additional tickets will be available at the door.
The event runs from 2-7 p.m. at Smoke on the Water Restaurant on Wilmington’s waterfront.
