Man Utd must take the Marcus Rashford money and run, the alternative is far worse

Manchester United must not get drawn into a long negotiation for Marcus Rashford’s services this summer.

Barcelona have first refusal to sign Marcus Rashford this summer. United negotiated a £26 million sale clause into the loan.

The La Liga side may choose to pay this in instalments, or not at all. They are reported to be considering alternative options.

If they back out of the deal, they must pay United a £5 million penalty fee.

Fabrizio Romano claimed last month that United are ‘prepared’ for all eventualities and are confident they ‘will have plenty of clubs interested in signing Rashford’.

United cannot afford to let the situation drag out.

Swift resolution over Marcus Rashford needed

Manchester United must take a proactive approach with Marcus Rashford this summer.

United are relying on Rashford’s sale raising money for incoming transfers, with new faces required.

Rashford is on an expensive contract and could be hard to shift, but United need to ensure there is a swift resolution.

The England international’s performance brought a mixed reaction from the Spanish media after Barcelona’s defeat in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid.

He had four shots on target but failed to make the breakthrough, with Barcelona slumping to a 2-0 home loss.

United need to be realistic and accept that Rashford’s value is not going to soar anytime soon.

The 28-year-old has played 484 career club games, plus 70 at international level. There is nothing fresh to discover with Rashford, we have seen the best and worst from him.

United fans have seen that even when there is a peak in performance, a more sustained dip is never far around the corner. It is a long time since his 30 goal campaign in 2022/23.

Rashford is among United’s highest earners, and his sale will benefit the club financially beyond the simple matter of the transfer fee.

No fresh start

Manchester United could end up stuck in a situation where Marcus Rashford reports for pre-season if Barcelona or another buying club have not agreed a fee.

The timeline for this could be dependent on whether Rashford makes the England squad for the World Cup or not.

And it could be the first difficult decision for Michael Carrick, if appointed, whether to reintegrate Rashford into the group or not.

It would be easy to see Rashford brought back as a temporary fix instead of signing a winger, a decision from club and player to give it one last shot.

But we have all seen how it goes. An occasional promise of brilliance, only to be let down again. United need to break the cycle and aspire to something more.
