Report: Chelsea owners claim Liam Rosenior has one thing over Enzo Maresca

The Chelsea hierarchy view Liam Rosenior as a more battle-tested appointment than Enzo Maresca, citing his extensive experience across English and French football.

Enzo Maresca arrived at Chelsea in 2024 with a relatively thin resume, having managed only one full season at Leicester City, yet he delivered immediate silverware in the form of the Conference League and the Club World Cup.

In contrast, by the time Liam Rosenior joined in January 2026, he had amassed over 170 games of senior management experience across Hull City and Strasbourg. His successful 18-month stint in France, where he secured European qualification for Strasbourg, is seen as proof of his capability.

Of course, Chelsea could end up securing silverware in the FA Cup, but you wouldn’t say that the extra experience from Rosenior has had much more of an impact.

Chelsea believes Liam Rosenior has better experience than Enzo Maresca

The Athletic have done a deep dive into the feelings surrounding Liam Rosenio currently at Chelsea, with one of the biggest takeaways being the club’s stance on the manager.

They claim that a source close to a senior player admits Rosenior is yet to carry quite the same aura that predecessors Mauricio Pochettino and Maresca had in the dressing room, but there is an acknowledgement that he has only been at the helm for three months.

Another one claims that the club are keen to paint a positive picture that he has made a good impression on the players in the dressing room and in training.

The club also see Rosenior as having a lot more managerial experience when he joined from Strasbourg at the start of the year, compared with Maresca when he was hired from Leicester in 2024.

It’s down to Liam Rosenior to prove people wrong

From a resume perspective, the owners have a valid point: Rosenior’s 170-game track record across three clubs offers a broader sample size. By successfully navigating the multi-club BlueCo system at Strasbourg, Rosenior demonstrated he can already align with the owners’ specific vision.

However, football is a results business, and Maresca’s critics would argue that his lack of experience didn’t stop him from winning two trophies in 18 months.

If Rosenior fails to secure Champions League football, his superior experience will quickly be dismissed as a mere fact that has very little weight to it.
