Raiders Could Make Sense for Polarizing Ex-Cowboys Star

The Las Vegas Raiders have put together a very impressive free agent class, finding impact players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. However, they were the worst team in the NFL last season, which means they have a ton of needs.

Cornerback is still an area of concern for the Raiders. They did re-sign Eric Stokes, who played very well last season, but the depth is an issue. Darien Porter showed promise last year, but he’s a young player who hasn’t been playing cornerback very long. It would be a big risk going into the season without another veteran on the roster.

The Raiders are likely making notable free agent moves until after the draft. Fortunately, there are still some big-name veterans in free agency. Trevon Diggs is one player who could be an option for Las Vegas.

Now, Diggs has struggled to be consistent in coverage in recent years, but the one thing he does well is turn the ball over. He has 20 interceptions in his career and led the NFL in interceptions with 11 in 2021. The Raiders only had eight interceptions last season, which was tied for the eighth-lowest in the league.

Diggs should be a cheaper option to take a risk on. Even if it doesn’t work out, he’d be easy to cut. The Raiders really need depth at cornerback, so why not take a chance on a former All-Pro who is still only 27?

Other Cornerbacks Raiders Could Look At

Diggs isn’t the only big-name cornerback still available in free agency. Marshon Lattimore was once considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, but injuries have derailed his career. He hasn’t played more than 10 games in a season since 2021.

Klint Kubiak worked with Lattimore when they were both with the New Orleans Saints in 2024, so there could be a relationship there. If he can stay healthy, he could potentially be a very good pickup for the Raiders.

L’Jarius Sneed is another player who was previously considered a high-end cornerback. He has fallen off due to injuries for the last two years, and it remains to be seen if he can return to form. He previously played his best football with the Kansas City Chiefs, so he’d have intimate knowledge of the AFC West rival. The Raiders could do worse than adding him as a depth piece.

What About the Draft?

This offseason, the Raiders seem more motivated to work on upgrading the offense. That makes sense because likely No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza is expected to join the team.

The Raiders are more likely to use their early draft picks to help Mendoza. The team has shown a lot of interest in wide receivers and offensive linemen. They haven’t shown much interest in cornerbacks.

The Raiders might not have plans to draft a cornerback during the first two days of the draft. If that’s the case, then they almost have to address the position in free agency. Stokes is a solid starter, and Porter has potential, but there’s very little depth on the roster.
