A former Dolphins starter signed with the 49ers
The Miami Dolphins failed to meet expectations during the 2025 season. Despite having holes on the roster, the team filled those holes prior to the season by signing veterans with starting experience to one-year contracts. Surprisingly, that strategy worked out well for the most part; however, the players that the team was built around like Tua Tagovailoa disappointed and it left Miami entering a rebuild in 2026.
As a result, the Dolphins’ expectations have been lowered in 2026. The teamparted ways with most of their highest-paid players. Miami’s new front office, led by general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, seems to be prioritizing draft capital and salary cap flexibility in 2027 over potentially making a run with the 2026 Dolphins.
That left starting-caliber players, who were part of the 2025 Dolphins, without contracts and in need of jobs elsewhere. Now, one of those players, who proved to be a key performer for the Dolphins, has signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
Former Miami Dolphins Cornerback Signs With 49ers
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that former Miami Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. The financial details of the contract have yet to be revealed.
Jones signed with the Dolphins prior to the 2025 season on a one-year, $1.1 million contract, as he had been released by the Las Vegas Raiders once they failed to find a trade partner for him. Jones carried a reputation as a capable playmaker at the cornerback position; however, he was widely seen as a locker room and off-the-field distraction.
With Miami, Jones started all 17 games last season. He registered one interception, which happened to be a game-winning interception against the Washington Commanders in a game played in Madrid.
Jones was rewarded by the NFLafter the season as his playing time resulted in him getting a $1.1 million bonus as he played 980 snaps for Miami during the 2025 season.
Miami Dolphins Cornerbacks
Miami’s top two cornerbacks during the 2025 season were Jones and Rasul Douglas, both of whom were signed on one-year deals prior to the season. While Douglas remains a free agent, Jones has now taken his talents to San Francisco.
The Dolphins now have a weakness at the cornerback position, as they lack players with proven experience. Fortunately, the team has seven selections inside of the first 100 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Miami could target LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane with the No. 11 pick in the draft. ESPN’sMarcel Louis-Jacques reported thatDelane visited with the Dolphins.
Delane is currently ranked as the eigth-best prospect by NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah. Regarding Delane,Jeremiah wrote:
“Delane is one of the most consistent players in this draft class. He makes everything look easy in coverage as a corner who is extremely loose and fluid in his change of direction. He is adept at press coverage, possessing the ability to re-route and mirror all over the field. In zone, he plays with instincts and awareness. He goes long stretches without getting challenged because of his tight coverage. When he is attacked, he can locate and make plays on the ball. He always looks to get involved in run defense, closing space in a hurry and operating as a physical, reliable tackler. He ran well at his pro day, alleviating any concerns about his speed. Overall, Delane has the tools to match up with every style of receiver. He can run with the vertical weapons and play physical with the bigger ones.”
