Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd senior chief wants 'best manager in the world' instead of Carrick

One Manchester United senior official dreams of hiring Luis Enrique as the club's manager in the future, according to the latest update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Caretaker boss Michael Carrick has put himself in strong contention to be named as Ruben Amorim's permanent Man United successor after taking 23 points from 30 available since taking charge in January.

Under the 44-year-old, the Red Devils have gone from being Champions League hopefuls to being in pole position to take their place in Europe's elite club competition next term.

United currently lie in third position ahead of hosting Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday night, with seven matches of the campaign remaining.

Carrick and his men are six points above fifth-placed Liverpool heading into the weekend, with a top-five finish guaranteeing a spot in the 2026-27 version of the Champions League.

With United in line to qualify for the first time since they were knocked out in the previous group format in 2023, Carrick could be given the job full-time, but he isn't the only option or target.

Romano: Man Utd Chief a 'Big Fan' of Luis Enrique

According to Romano, one Man United chief internally has a 'dream' to appoint PSG boss Luis Enrique as the club's manager in the future.

Their ambition to potentially make that happen now appears unlikely however, with the Ligue 1 leaders confident that the Spaniard will soon sign a new contract to remain at the Parc des Princes.

The 55-year-old 'best manager in the world' is advancing in discussions with the French giants, who took another step to retaining their Champions League crown as they beat Liverpool 2-0 in their quarter-final first leg tie this week.

Speaking about Enrique's situation in his latest YouTube video, Romano said:

"What I can say is that Paris Saint-Germain remain absolutely optimistic. Nothing has been signed yet, but Paris Saint-Germain remain absolutely optimistic, as they've always been.

"So Luis Enrique is advancing in these conversations with Paris Saint-Germain over a new contract for the next year. So until 2030 the conversation is very positive.

"The reality on Luis Enrique and Manchester United is that, let me say, there is someone internally at Manchester United who is a big, big fan and dreams of Luis Enrique as Manchester United manager one day.

"But at the moment, the focus of Luis Enrique is on negotiating this new contract with Paris Saint-Germain and on the pitch."

'Genius' Carrick Alternative Ready to Join Man United

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann during a press conference

According to GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs, there will be some Man United outreach to Carrick alternatives this month as the club weighs up its options for their next best manager.

One of those is likely to be Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann who, along with Carrick, is above Mauricio Pochettino on the club's summer shortlist.

While Nagelsmann is focused on leading his nation at the 2026 World Cup, he is 'open' to taking a club job this summer and is keen on managing in the Premier League, according to Jacobs.

Whether an agreement could be reached before the tournament is another thing, with United potentially wanting someone in place earlier in the summer to prepare for what could be a huge 2026-27 campaign for them as European football returns to Old Trafford.
