Former NFL player Chad Johnson has called out former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
Johnson, who recently signed as a brand ambassador for UFC Fight Pass, insisted his desire to compete isn’t just for clicks. Johnson admitted that while he would “drown” if the fight hit the mat, he believes his athleticism would allow him to “survive” on the feet.
Johnson’s timing follows a difficult period for Adesanya, who is currently on a four-fight losing streak. Most recently, on March 28, 2026, Adesanya suffered a defeat to Joe Pyfer in Seattle, leading many to wonder if he will retire. While Izzy has shut down those claims, further defeats will bring up those questions again.
Adesanya Reacts
Despite Johnson’s wish, the path to a UFC contract remains blocked by the promotion’s current philosophy. UFC CEO Dana White has recently reiterated that the days of “sideshow” fights are finished. “We aren’t in the influencer boxing business.” At 48, Johnson would face significant hurdles with athletic commissions for a professional MMA debut, especially against a striker of Adesanya’s caliber.
“I like that! … Izzy, Adesanya, I don’t want any excuses. Come get this belt. Come get this belt. Me and you, five minutes, three rounds. Anywhere. Matter of fact, I’ll come to New Zealand. I don’t have a passport. Nevermind. Come to Miami,” Johnson said
