Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit believes Robin van Persie could one day take charge of Manchester United, suggesting the former striker is on a coaching trajectory that may ultimately lead him back to Old Trafford in the dugout.
Van Persie, currently head coach of Feyenoord, only recently stepped into full management after working within the club’s youth and staff setups. Yet his rise has already drawn widespread interest, particularly in the Netherlands, where many believe he represents the next generation of elite Dutch coaches.
Speaking to Dutch media this week, Gullit said he sees “all the qualities” required for Van Persie to eventually manage Manchester United, the club where he famously won the Premier League title in 2013. Gullit highlighted the former forward’s intelligence, leadership and technical understanding, qualities he believes translate naturally into top-level coaching
‘It would be great if Robin van Persie became the manager of Manchester United in the future,’ Gullit told Gambling Insider. ‘I definitely hope that happens at some point!
‘Robin is a great manager, but he’s struggling a little bit at Feyenoord at the moment. I feel like the expectations for him are very high because of the career he had, so he’s under the spotlight a lot more than other managers in the Eredivisie
‘He’s under fire over here in Holland at the moment, but I hope he’s given time to rectify it and prove how good he is. Look what happened with Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United – they kept him, and look how good he ended up being!
‘Down the line however, I think it would be great for Robin to manage at Old Trafford one day.’
Would Van Persie Suit a Future United Job?
While the prospect remains hypothetical, Van Persie’s profile does align with the modern managerial trend: young, tactically curious, and comfortable with both development and high-performance environments. His elite playing career gives him credibility, and his calm, analytical personality suggests managerial potential.
However, success at Manchester United demands much more than footballing intelligence. It requires experience managing egos, navigating media pressure, and thriving within one of the world’s most demanding football institutions.
If Van Persie builds a strong record at Feyenoord and beyond, he could indeed emerge as a compelling candidate one day—but only after proving himself over several seasons at the top level.
