Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has taken aim at Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, accusing the duo of abandoning the club during one of their most difficult stretches in recent memory. The pundit called the two “selfish animals” on talkSPORT after their controversial comments about the international break sparked anger around Stamford Bridge.
The outbursts happened after a rough stretch of games for new head coach Liam Rosenior, who took over from Enzo Maresca in January. Chelsea are currently in sixth place in the Premier League with 48 points from 31 games. They are six points behind Aston Villa, who are in fourth place.
After PSG beat the Blues heavily in the Champions League, Enzo Fernandez revealed that had doubts about his future. During the break, Marc Cucurella used an interview with The Athletic to publicly question the club’s youth-heavy recruitment model and the decision to fire Maresca in the middle of the season.
Cundy did not respond lightly to the situation, slamming the duo with his comments:
“Selfish animals, I’ll tell you for nothing. There is a lot of looking after number one here, the rats starting to think about leaving a sinking ship, that’s what it tells me. Keep it in-house. If you’ve got something to say, say it privately, and deal with it internally.”
Cundy’s anger is similar to that of fans watching their club’s leaders complain to the press or on podcasts, rather than behind closed doors at Cobham. Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for €65 million in 2022 and has played 154 games for the club, told The Athletic that he didn’t agree with the decision to fire Enzo Maresca in the middle of the season. On the other hand, there are still strong rumours that Fernandez will move to Real Madrid this summer, as the Argentine midfielder revealed his admiration for the Spanish capital city.

The club banned Fernandez from playing for two games, but Cucurella didn’t get in trouble, despite not bringing up his concerns privately before speaking publicly.
