Andy Mitten reveals surprise detail about Harry Maguire' new Man Utd contract he's heard

Harry Maguire is understood not to have taken a pay cut in his new Manchester United contract, journalist Andy Mitten has revealed.

The England international penned a new deal with United this week, extending his stay at Old Trafford until June 2027, with the option for a further year.

While initial reports suggested Maguire accepted a contract on a lower salary, Mitten believes United paid substantial money to convince the centre-back to stay.

Maguire, whose previous deal was due to expire in June, had no shortage of suitors, with clubs in Turkey, Italy and the United States all wanting to sign him on a free transfer.

Mitten, speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, revealed that Maguire’s new deal at Old Trafford does not involve a pay cut, as United needed to pay the centre-back ‘good money’ to fend off interest from foreign clubs.

“I do not think there has been a pay cut. I’ve been on this story for a long time.

“He could’ve gone to Turkey and earned more money because he was effectively a free transfer.

“Manchester United needed to pay him good money to stay. He had interest from the United States and four clubs in Italy that I know of.”

Maguire has been ever-present for United under interim boss Michael Carrick, starting all 10 Premier League games since his appointment in January.

The 33-year-old’s recent form earned him an England recall last month and his first international appearances in 18 months.

He featured in both games during March’s international break, putting his name back in contention for a place in the 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Maguire joined United from Leicester in August 2019 for £80m, which remains a world-record fee for a defender.

Kobbie Mainoo Contract Talks Ongoing

Manchester United could soon announce a new contract for midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as well, having made significant progress in talks in recent weeks.

The Old Trafford side are believed to be working towards a new five-year agreement for the 20-year-old, who has regained his confidence in recent games under Carrick.

Since United switched to a 4-2-3-1 system under their interim boss, Mainoo has featured regularly in the first XI, registering nine starts in 10 games under Carrick.

The midfielder was the subject of interest from defending Serie A champions Napoli in January amid his limited involvement under ex-manager Ruben Amorim, who started Mainoo just once in the league this season.
