Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer thinks his former club will try to re-sign Elliot Anderson this summer.

The Magpies sold the midfielder to Nottingham Forest for £35m two years ago, and while Shearer laments the reason why he was offloaded in the first place, he says Eddie Howe’s side could be among several teams competing for his signature this summer:

“Elliot Anderson will have plenty of interest in the summer if he is available. I guess Newcastle will be back in for him as well, which just puts a sour taste in your mouth because again, we go back to the PSR and what it was brought in for and what it was meant to do.”

“It wasn’t designed for you to sell your local players; it wasn’t brought in for that. So, I don’t like what you have to do with it. But there’s no doubt that he’s flourished since he left Newcastle.”

“He’s going to be a starter for England in the World Cup, which will also enhance his reputation. He’s a very, very good player. He’s shown that this season. He’s been given the opportunity at Nottingham Forest, has grabbed it with both hands and flourished. It would not surprise me.”

“I guess it all depends on what happens with Nottingham Forest as well, if they get relegated and what have you. That’s one to keep an eye on. But if he does make it known he wants to leave, then there’ll be no shortage of clubs that are after him.”

Both Manchester clubs want Anderson

It is believed that Manchester City are the team currently leading the race for the 23-year-old, while rivals Manchester United also have him as one of their top targets.

As Shearer says, a lot may still hinge on Nottingham Forest’s fate. If the Tricky Trees remain in the Premier League, they will be in a much better position to hold out for a sizeable fee.

£100m may be too much for Newcastle

Most reports have suggested that Anderson’s price tag will be close to nine figures. As things stand, that would be beyond the means of what the Magpies could pay.

However, if Sandro Tonali‘s departure is sanctioned over the coming months, and a considerable amount is raised from his sale, it could be reinvested in bringing Anderson back to the North East.
