
A former WVU quarterback who starred after transferring to Louisville and later played in the NFL has died.
Browning Nagle died of colon cancer Friday. He was 57.
Nagle was recruited by former Mountaineer coach Don Nehlen out of Florida. He came in the same recruiting class as Major Harris. The two showed during Thursday evening scrimmages during their first fall in Morgantown that success was in their futures.
Nagle transferred to Louisville after spring football in 1987. Harris went on to become a Hall of Fame quarterback in Morgantown while Nagle led Louisville under center for two seasons. The 1990 team won the 1991 Fiesta Bowl where Nagle was named MVP in his final collegiate game, a 34-7 victory over Alabama where he threw for more than 400 yards.
Nagle ws drafted by the New York Jets and played for the Jets until 1994. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons.
The Jets announced his death Friday. The University of Louisville posted a statement on social media.
“We are saddened by the passing of Browning Nagle, former Fiesta Bowl MVP quarterback and Louisville great. His leadership on the field and passion for the game left a lasting mark on our program. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and teammates during this difficult time.”
